Copyright and Licenses

Copyright

You may only submit your own original work to UCW Wise.

If submitting previously published scholarship to the Scholarly Work collection, you are responsible for confirming that you have the requisite copyright permissions. Generally, submission will be possible if your work is already Open Access or if you own the copyrights. Some publishers also allow you to self-archive pre-prints (Author's Own Manuscript (AOM)) or post-prints (Author's Accepted Manuscript (AAM)) of your scholarship in your institutional repository, even when they own copyrights over the version of record

You can use Jisc Open Policy Finder or Shareyourpaper to determine whether your published work can be shared in an institutional repository and to learn which version of your work is shareable. This information will also be included in the agreement/contract that you signed with your chosen publisher. If you are still in doubt after consulting these resources, your publisher's representative can also verify your copyright permissions and restrictions (including any mandatory embargo periods).

Copyright Assistance

UCW affiliates who require consultation on copyright prior to their UCW Wise submission may email UCW's Scholarly Communications and Copyright Librarian or wise@canwest.ca for assistance.

Copyright Complaints

UCW Wise takes copyright seriously and will respond in good faith to all copyright complaints and notices of claimed infringement. If you believe that an item in our institutional repository infringes upon your copyrights, please email wise@ucanwest.ca.

UCW Wise License Agreement

All items in the institutional repository are licensed under the UCW Wise License Agreement. The UCW Wise License Agreement (Public View) makes the submitted item(s) available for the public to view and copy for non-commercial purposes only. Requests for alternative Creative Commons licenses are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. It is the submitter’s responsibility to inform the library of alternative open license requests as a part of the submission process. The UCW Wise License Agreement (Archive Only) makes the submitted item(s) available to repository administrators only for description and preservation purposes.

The UCW Wise License Agreement only covers items that are listed by title on a signed license agreement. If you upload multiple items for submission, you must list every item by title on the UCW Wise License Agreement of your choosing. Both UCW Wise License Agreements have multiple lines for this purpose (under "Titles of Submissions"). For example, if you submit an essay and a slide deck in your submission form, include both the title of the essay and the title of the slide deck in your submission form. If they have the same title, please add information in parentheses after the title to help the repository team differentiate between them, e.g., (.ppt) and (.pdf). If you upload an item for submission that is not listed in your signed UCW Wise License Agreement, it will not be added to the repository.

In cases of co-authorship, all co-authors must agree to and sign the UCW Wise License Agreement prior to submission. Submissions lacking the signature of a co-author will not be accepted.
